The Logos

by Joel Ramshaw (2021)

John 1:1-5 “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.”

The word “Word” is translated out of the Greek “logos.” This is a powerful word which has many meanings. It can refer to simply “a word,” but also to speech, doctrine, teaching, the expression of an idea, and to the written word. Greek philosopher Heraclitus first used the term Logos around 600 B.C. to designate the divine reason or plan which coordinates the changing universe. In Genesis, God’s first act was to release light into the universe by speaking the Word and having it (him) manifest. Note that the sun, moon, and stars were not made until the fourth day. No where does it say God “created” light. Obviously, this verse is not referring to natural light, but to spiritual. God did not create the light, rather he released the light from Himself. This is similar to how we think of Christ, we say Jesus was “begotten, not made” to quote the Nicene creed. God’s light also, is begotten and emitted directly from Him, not just something he “created.”

Looking at the universe, there are many innumerable laws which govern its function. The law of gravity, the laws of electromagnetism. The strong and weak nuclear forces which hold atoms together. These are only a few of them. But why do atoms obey any laws at all, why is the universe not chaotic? What enforces the “laws” of the universe? It is the Logos, the Word, Jesus Christ. Before taking on human form, Jesus always functioned as the Logos, holding the universe together. The invisible governing force of Christ is what causes the atoms to obey laws.

Colossians 1:17 “And He Himself existed and is before all things, and in Him all things hold together. [His is the controlling, cohesive force of the universe.]” (Amplified Bible)

Hebrews 1:3 “….upholding all things by the word of His power.”

Think of a computer screen. In order to generate the words such as this text, there is much code running behind the scenes. If you right click the page and hit the “view source” option, you get to see the code behind this page. If someone wants to create a video game, they need to first learning a programming language and then create code to represent the characters, write code for the background and environment, code for the mechanics and motions. Finally when it is all finished, a person can purchase and enjoy the game, but they have no clue of the invisible code that is working behind the scenes to create all the beauty. This is like how Christ the Logos, works from behind the scenes, acting as the laws of the universe to uphold all the beauty and order in creation.

DNA is also a type of code. All of the wisdom and design for the human body is encased in strings of four letters: A, G, T, and C. Various combinations and ordering of these four letters in our DNA provides the full instructions to assemble our complete human body with all its unbelievable extreme complexity. All of this is behind the scenes, in the nucleus. We see the visible finished product, arms, legs, eyes, but the code creating it is invisible.

The Word is the masculine characteristic, the seed. The Spirit is the feminine characteristic. Before God spoke a word or brought forth light, He first sent His Spirit to hover upon the waters (Genesis 1). When the Word entered to join the Spirit, the creation of life began.
