Invisible Wells

by Joel Ramshaw (2021)

Genesis 21:15-19

“And the water was spent in the bottle, and she cast the child under one of the shrubs.

And she went, and sat her down over against him a good way off, as it were a bow shot: for she said, Let me not see the death of the child. And she sat over against him, and lift up her voice, and wept.

And God heard the voice of the lad; and the angel of God called to Hagar out of heaven, and said unto her, What aileth thee, Hagar? fear not; for God hath heard the voice of the lad where he is.

Arise, lift up the lad, and hold him in thine hand; for I will make him a great nation.

And God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water; and she went, and filled the bottle with water, and gave the lad drink.”

When reading this passage, we sometimes get the idea as if God miraculously created a well out of thin air in order to help Hagar who was dying of thirst. We miss an important detail. Reading carefully, what the passage actually says is that God OPENED HER EYES to see the well. The well was already there! Sometimes in our own lives we can spend a lot of time praying for a miracle from God when we already have the provision present in our environment and simply need His help to open our eyes to the opportunity that is right in front of us! Hagar was looking downward, in despair and tears. If she could only have a more positive attitude and look forward, she would have seen the well of provision that was there the entire time. Too often we can be like Hagar with our eyes pointed downward to the earth and earthly things rather than forward to what God has planned ahead; we thus miss the provision that is right in front of us. If you are feeling in despair due to lack of provision, rather than blame God for not providing, give Him thanks in faith for sending the provision. After this, pray that God will open your eyes to your external environment to see where the well of provision is that you may have ignored or overlooked. Perhaps you need a job and there is a great job waiting, but you may have brushed it off too quickly or given up before even applying. Go over these things with God, which may have been missed. God has already provided you the well. Pray He will open your eyes to it and you will see it!
